1946 (JAN.3.) use of blue on cream FORMULA type AIR MAIL/LETTER CARD of Australia addressed to Brisbane bearing Netherland 7 1/2c grey adhesive pair tied by boxed NEDERALAND INDIES/P.T.T./BALIKPAPAN cancel. Written by a Dutch soldier with origin annotated on the reverse flap 'Regiment Artillerie Battery/Balikpapan/Borneo' with long message inside. Following the Battle of Borneo the 9th Australian division remained in Borneo until January 1946 with Dutch troops remaining a little longer. This air letter probably being taken by sea on the HMS Vengeance that left with the Australian troops on January 12th. Struck at left by circular PASSED BY/R.N.F.CENSOR/No. h/s signed. A scarce Dutch usage of this Australian stationery in North Borneo. Balikpapan is a seaport on the East coast of Borneo.
