1867 PROOF ESSAY of unissued stamp printed in the form of the St.Lucia first adhesive (SG type 1) on cream paper (49x61mm) but inscribed ST.KITTS/POSTAGE printed in black on ungummed paper. Whilst these essays are attributed to the 'Boston Gang' Robson Lowe mentions in his handbook Vol 6 that they are 'too well engraved' to have been forgeries and that E.L.Pemberton and other philatelists consider them to be genuine and possibly submitted by Perkins Bacon. Indeed - Why would they forge a stamp that was never issued? Attractive item.
